Golf Bag Size and Club Placement

To play golf well, having the right equipment is essential, and a golf bag is one of the most important items. Let's take a closer look at the size of a golf bag and how to organize your clubs inside.

Guide to Buying the Best Golf Bag

Golf Bag Size

The typical size of a golf bag is 50 inches, which equals 127 cm. The diameter (width) of the bag's opening is usually 8.5 inches (28 cm), with smaller openings commonly found on stand bags. Other common sizes include 9.0, 9.5, and 10.5 inches (35 cm).

Having a golf bag made from high-quality materials can reflect the status of a golf enthusiast. If it's a reputable brand paired with premium materials and design, the bag can be quite valuable.

Proper Placement of Golf Clubs in the Bag

Step 1:
Take all the clubs out of the bag and lay them in a row, either in ascending or descending order.

Step 2:
If you're reorganizing an existing bag, remove any unnecessary items like ball retrievers, golf balls, tees, etc. This is also a great opportunity to clean out any clutter and dust inside the bag. If you're using a new bag, you can skip this step.

Step 3:
Place your woods at the top of the bag (closest to the straps). If the bag has individual slots, the most logical arrangement is to place them in descending order from the driver (1-wood), from left to right. If the top has just one large pocket, put all the woods in that space. A standard-sized ball retriever is typically stored with the woods.

Step 4:
Place 3 to 4 long irons in the lower-left section of the bag's compartments or pockets. For example, put the 2-iron, 3-iron, 4-iron, and 5-iron in this section.

Step 5:
Place 3 to 4 short irons in the lower-right section of the bag's compartments or pockets. For example, put the 6-iron, 7-iron, 8-iron, and 9-iron in this section.

Step 6:
Place your wedges and putter in the bottom section of the bag. Many players prefer to put the putter in the very bottom slot or pocket for easy access. Sometimes, an item might snag on the bag, causing the putter to hang outside during play.

Step 7:
Once the clubs are organized, place other equipment in the pockets. The most accessible pocket, usually located below the wedge and iron sections, is a good spot for storing golf balls.
